awakens is a keyword first appearing in Lost Lands.

awakens is not a passive abilities.
Cards with awakens start out as artifacts, but have effects by which they are able to "awaken" into an Aldmor ally with 3 attack, 3 health and no abilities, although some may be able to gain additional abilities when they are awakened.
- Phase structure of the awakens mechanism:
- The artifact's ability is triggered.
- The artifact leaves play, either by being destroyed or removed from the battlefield.
- The artifact re-enters play as an exhausted Aldmor ally (note that "re-enters" is not to be confused with "returned to play").
