Gamer. Designer. Coder. (GDC's 17,000th post)

Hi, I'll keep this brief because I've got other posts to make ...

    GAMER

I started out with Shadow Era as just another gamer in 2011. I played it on my iPhone, then computer and then my iPad when I got one.

I ran organised play events when I could, but that was primarily to give something back for the game I loved playing.

I don't get that much time to play any more, but I'll get in a game when I can.

    DESIGNER

I became a designer for the game at the end of 2011, initially working on rebalancing Call of the Crystals for its lockdown and printing.

After that, I got to work on all aspects of card design for Dark Prophecies and Shattered Fates.

Designing those two sets with my fellow Design Team members was a lot of hard work, but the pay-off was so worth it: the feeling of having people play with and talk about a card you've designed (let alone a whole set you've made as a team) is just fantastic.

I feel honored and privileged to be in this position, and hope to continue and improve in my designer role as Shadow Era grows further.

Honestly, I didn't think it could get any better.

    CODER

About six weeks ago, I left my full-time day-job (yes, Shadow Era was previously something I did in my "spare time"!) to try to make it on my own as a freelance software developer and entrepreneur.

As part of the former, I contacted Kyle about whether there was a chance of me having a go at fixing some of the bugs found in the the Shattered Fates beta.

I figured there would be enough working cards in there to learn from, and I could use my knowledge of the game to ensure fixes were in line with the design intent and game rules.

Kyle said yes and the rest is history! All known card bugs have now been squished as of 2.8507, which is on the test server now.

Turns out it was possible for things to get even better! No one likes bugs, so knowing that I've been able to improve the game in this way takes my happiness to another level.

Going forwards, I'm not sure how much more coding I will be doing versus the design work, but I hope to remain chief card bug fixer for when more inevitably surface.

And now you know what GDC (also) stands for!

    17,000

Please help me celebrate the 17,000 posts I've made on this forum, and (test) what I've done so far in this new Coder role, by playing some games on the test server to check everything is working OK!

Only with your games can we get the confidence we need to submit the 2.85 update for live release (or find bugs we missed, so I can squish them!).

Need an incentive, other than showing appreciation for all my contributions to Shadow Era and its community over the past three years? Screw you!

Thanks for reading and I hope to see you on the test server!
