When more than one card or effect is set to resolve simultaneously, Shadow Era uses a simple process to determine which cards or effects get priority at what times. This is known as the Standard Resolution Order, or SRO. Cards and effects trigger one at a time, recursively, based on who controls them and their type. Below you can see the top-level order of resolution:

# Active Hero
# Allies friendly to that hero
# Items/Support Abilities belonging to that hero
# Repeat steps 1-3 for opposing hero and its allies, items and support abilities.

When 2 or more cards in the same category are supposed to trigger at the same time, such as two friendly allies,they are triggered in the order in which they appear on the board (from the perspective of their hero) from left to right (which should match the order they were played). For example, if you played a weapon on turn 5 and then an armor card on turn 6, and they both had an ability that triggered when you dealt combat damage, the weapon’s ability would trigger first. This is because they are both part of the items/support abilities category.

Where a card has an attachment, that attachment has the opportunity to resolve immediately after the card it is attached to, before any further non-attachment cards are processed. (Multiple attachments on the same card are processed in the order they were attached.)

If multiple cards are sent to the graveyard simultaneously, they are placed there in the order they were played. The card which was played the earliest is sent to the graveyard first, followed by the next earliest, until all the cards required to move to the graveyard are moved (the most recently-played card should be on top).

It is important to note that effects on cards in play are triggered even just before dying. However, after an ally has been dealt lethal damage (had its health decreased to 0) it will no longer be able to gain life to stay alive, because its death has already been triggered.

Shattered Fates

In Shattered Fates, we return to Balor months after Rothem's defeat and find a world that has not been doing well. In the passing months signs of decay from the massive loss of energies caused by the war and the battle of Ft. Balor have become rampant. Soil turning infertile to the point that crops refuse to grow. Livestock becoming sickly, with people not far behind. Some rivers are even beginning to run dry.

The heroes as well begin to see the effects of the war. Emotions ran high in the peak of battles, but they still find themselves angry and belligerent when the moods are not called for. Whatever energies they've been drawing from the Shadow Crystals seem to have a steeper price than they'd originally believed.

General Gunther finds himself strained to supply resources to the armies he still commands, while the kingdoms that stood so proudly against Rothem now start to bicker once more. Old alliances and grudges begin to resurface as resources become further strained by the dwindling life force of the planet. Some even question the need for an army as the Shadow have been beaten so far back.

Meanwhile, the Shadow fight among themselves for dominance with the loss of their leader. Arthyle, still loyal to the defeated king, begins to move the leaders of each race into a new, if uneasy, alliance. He promises them the very power Rothem had sought in the lands of the Wylds, the power of the Aldmor.

As the war begins anew, a ne'er-do-well street urchin displaced by the wars in Layar takes residence in the abandoned and gutted remains of Fort Balor. There, among the ashes he finds a small journal written by a long dead priest and his now legend son. Through this the boy, called Omril, Wizent's warnings become heard once more.

Dark Prophecies

With the war in full swing, Loest gets caught up with a group of Irumian soldiers debating on which side to join. After a massive attack from the Shadow on the Vale, and a rescue by the human commander Gunther, the Irumian agree to help the human forces, acting as a staging point for an assault against the fallen lands of Layar. Loest discovers the corruption the crystals cause; the power of the Crystals not only drains the lands but tears away at the user, eventually making them into a being of the same negative energy. Despite this he vows to protect his world at any cost.

Meanwhile Rothem works to rebuild the ancient machine constructed by the Aldmor (most of whom are now known as the Elementals), gathering more and more forces to his banner. He stays mainly at Castle Layar, with vast plains to serve as warning against anyone attempting to bring a small force. This leads the human armies to launch an all out campaign against the castle, trying to stop the end before it begins; a plan which succeeds in retaking the structure and revealing Rothem's identity, but fails in killing him. The former King retreats to Fort Balor, changed to match his new persona, with the ancient machine.

A plan is formed to use the Human armies as a distraction against the fort while Loest and a group of King's Hand (assassins) aim to slip in through Jericho's secret entrance. The plan works to a point, allowing them to assault Rothem, but he slaughters the assassins out of hand, and leaves Loest to die as the boy watches him ascend - but Loest summons all of his pain and bitterness, channels it into the crystal, and unleashes it into the machine just as it activates. This overloads the machine, and reduces Rothem to a pile of crystals and black goo, leaking into the lower sections of the fort. It also costs him his life, but leaves the Shadow with no leadership, forcing them to escape the battle and lick their wounds.

Call of the Crystals

Rothem's plan to unite the Shadow Worlds during their first steps into Balor is succeeding. Instead of a bumbling force, they're a cohesive army and quickly set about the task of earning a foothold in Layar. Fort Balor is the first to fall, but Castle Layar is not far behind it. Despite having the Shadow Crystals first, the humans find themselves losing both land and crystals by the moment. Within months, the majority of Layar falls under the rule of Rothem and his Shadow armies. Seeing now the power of the Shadow, many countries begin to fear what is coming for them.

Ellos and Vozit set aside their differences at the request of the Brother's Isle, and try to convince the other nations to do the same. They lend aide to the fierce fighters of Lyth, hoping to maintain some foothold on the continent, but without the aide of Irum their alliance begins to lose steam. The power of the Shadow Crystals and the ferocity of the Shadow armies prove a formidable enemy. Despite having heroes, people capable of harnessing the Shadow Energy, There just aren't enough to go around and mount an offensive.

Attacks are launched against the strengthening Shadow forces, earning Crystals as a reward for many of these heroes, yet they find themselves still unable to turn the tide. That is until Jericho, high priest of the church of Ellos, is guided by a vision of his deity to a hidden entrance to the caves of Mount Balor. This new entrance grants him access to the massive cache of Shadow Crystals, which he uses to power the forming Human war machine. These prove vital for inspiring Gunther to come back into the fold as a leader rather than a simple insurgent. Finally, the Gaderi agree to join the battle, leaving only Irum to decide which side it will lend its militia to.

The Start of the War

During the construction of his new Castle atop the highest mountain in the world, King Rothem's workers stumbled into a cave system. Here they found a special mineral, dubbed a Shadow Crystal, with incredible power. These crystals were protected my a massive being of pure energy which quickly corrupted the workers into mindless beasts of hate a rage, employing them to protect the cave from further exploration. This action, however, is what began the downward spiral. This new power could tip the scales of power in Balor, and made Rothem desperate to finish his new fortress to assert his people's prowess to the rest of the world. Nishaven was sent to fortress, where he was forced to fight the workers- but gained access to the Shadow Crystals in turn.

Rothem believed these new weapons would allow him to finish what his ancestors had begun in the Last War, and began experimenting with their powers, sending some to what few allies he trusted. Once he discovered that a select few people could control the power, and that he was among them, King Rothem gathered several together and absorbed all the energy he could. This power shattered his perception and sent him to a higher plane of existence for a brief moment. It was long enough for him to gain an understanding of past events-and what was coming.

These experiments with the crystals led to the world needing more negative energy to balance itself out, an energy which had to be drawn from outside the closed system of its universe. So portals opened to the darkest, most sinister worlds in existence, drawing the energy there into this one. Energy, and denizens. The first worlds began bleeding over small creatures and powers, causing the locals to fight back, worsening the issues. Eventually the main forces of the Shadow began to enter the fray, but without any organization or leadership.

Rothem, having seen the past, knew the only way to defeat what was coming was to unite an army of incredible power under one flag, and arm them with the power of the crystals. His plan was to use the crystals as the Aldmor had so long ago, but only the power of the Shadows. That would give him the power of an Other, the enemy the Celestials could not defeat, and an army capable of gaining the crystals to do it. Since power was his main goal, the new armies coming in through the gates was the perfect choice. So he donned the persona of the 'Man of Shadows', and began to form his army.

In the moment the crystals were opened another gained a glimpse of what was to come, but without the benefit of the past. Powerful but old, Wizent saw the path Rothem would lead his people to and knew there were few who could stop him. Among them, his adopted son Loest. So he gave the young man his journal with the prophecies in it, and sent him out into the world; sacrificing his own life to give Loest the chance to escape.
