Changes to Rated Matches for October 2017

    Hi all!

    ***UPDATED***

As of October 1st, the following changes will apply for Rated matches, intended to improve competition and enjoyment:

    1. The maximum deck size for Rated matches will be 80 cards plus hero.

    2. Each player's current Score will be calculated as the sum of their most recent 50 Match Scores that month only. (As with the previous Score system, your Match Score for a victory is YourRating*OpponentRating/100, your Match Score for a loss is 0 and any games you draw are treated as though they didn't happen.)

    3. Your highest Score each month (representing your best 50-match period that month) will always be stored as your Best Score, so there is no risk of harming it and every reason to continue trying to improve on it.

    4. The Best Score Leaderboard will show the players with the top 100 Best Scores, acting as the ultimate measure of player skill and performance each month, and those players will be rewarded accordingly. In addition, for October, the top 4 Best Scores will earn invites to WC2017 Grand Finals!

    5. Your Player Profile will show your Best Score with ranking and also your Mean Best Score with ranking. (The Mean Best Score ranking will be helpful to track your progress compared to others before you reach 50 matches.)

    6. After 1st October, there are no plans to reset player Ratings (which are used for match-making and calculating the Match Score for a victory) again. This will mean that you will always be paired with someone of similar skill regardless of how long you have been absent for. (Your Match Score history and Best Score are reset at the start of every month, however).

Please Note: For risk-free games that do not affect Rating or Score, we already automatically pair players who create Custom Games with default options and no password. The added advantage here is that you can see people waiting as well.

You can see an example of the new Leaderboard here (the data has been collected from matches since noon GMT on 29th Sept): http://game.shadowera.com/rankings2.php

I'll reserve the post below to answer any questions you might have while I'm readying the new Score system for deployment!

Im not sure if its the right thread to post this....

In my PERCEPTION if a player plays many games in the first day of the season, seems to get an "advantage".

after a few games which used by the previous system to positioning him, he/she seem to get more rating points per win and of course more lost per loss, compaired to later games of the month.

IF (and thats a big IF) this is true it gives an edge to players with high win ratio, only because they were able to play the first day/s.

This new system won't involve a Rating reset (other than one at the start of October to make it fair for everyone who might have unknowingly risked their rating expecting a reset). Those on higher Rating will start out with the potential to earn more Score for a win, but also more chance of being paired with tougher opponents.

EDITED to show there will be a reset for October 1st.

This will be interesting, so no monthly reset can lead to a big rating over time?

Since there is no mode for decktesting and fun purposes the unchanged monthly rating could be a "fun" breaker for many people.
Decktesting and fun games could result in a serious rating loss that will follow the player the next month if it goes unchanged diminising his chances to come back to competitive scene (rating and score wise).

Good players will have less motive to try new decks and they will stick to their better ones if they want to be competitive.

A rating reset for matchmaking purpuses (discused in other thread), will prevent that until a new unrated mode is reliased.

So ratings are not reset after 50 games? Or at least once per month? Seems like a huge disadvantage for new players and I fear a loss of activity or new competitive players.
This Score system also discourages you to play more than 50 Games. Once you have a decent score you don't have to play anymore, which is terrible for activity. Rating systems should encourage you to play as much as possible.
A change would be to reset Rating after 50 Games to make each "Score Run" an individual attempt at a high score.
    This system has multiple benefits:
    - High activity at all ratings troughout the whole season
    - encourages you to play more games, to get an even higher score
    - you always feel like you're accomplishing something
    - can be supported with several ranks or leagues for reaching a certain score treshold.

Are you serious no rating reset how is it enjoyed when you gain 1 pt of rating after win and it seems like score is more important than rating now

Despite the fact that I would massively benefit from such a system, it shouldnt be implemented like this. Right now we have rating as a measure of skill and score as a measurement for activity. In fact high rated players already had an advantage by getting more points earned through victories,

The games has a problem with declining activity in QM right now. Removing the motivation of the top 50ish scored players to put time into QM to get some foils will not only hurt lower rated and newer players, but everyone who plays QM.

I would be in favor of replacing the current ranking system with the system you proposed. Judging skill based on winquote seems fair to me. Removing the activity rewards and make everything about skill cant be the solution tho, SE needs as many active players as it can get right now. Thats way more important than more rewards for topplayers, who already have several ways to earn rewards through the tournament scene.

So is a new player going to expect to place Top 100 in their first season? I can't imagine that happening unless they play a lot of games anyway and if they do that and do well then their rating will shoot up to where others are regardless. Once the first ten games where climbing took place are erased from their 50-game window then it's like they've always been up high.

For a long time people have complained that resetting rating ruins matchmaking and it causes the initial rush in first few days of the month which is seen as unfair by some due to the chance for an easy streak of wins. We've just solved both of those with no reset.

Your "Score Run" idea would bring too much randomness in (it's luck-based how you are actually paired up with when there are people not at their appropriate rating) and it's why the climb should not be in the equation in the first place and why we are not resetting. We might "decay" everybody somewhat but a reset to 0 makes no sense when Rating is meant to be a rough measure of skill used for matchmaking.

It's my expectation that the best players will play more than 50 but we will have to see how it goes.
