As long as it’s not explicit or insulting, Shadow Era, ETC guild members are welcome to come up with their own guild slogan using the abbreviation for et cetera. This laid back atmosphere and support of individuality is reflective of the ETC guild’s primary goal; for Shadow Era players to connect with each other beyond game play. Founded as an alternative to the highly competitive guilds, Gondorian created ETC for players who wanted to improve their Shadow Era game but were also interested in all the extra things that come with being part of a guild; being part of a supportive community and making real friendships.
Guided by the current leaders, Preybird, Veles, Buqs and Berdugo the guild has grown to around 50 members. As other guilds promote competition and wanting to dominate the Quick Match and tournament scene, ETC focuses on fostering their tight knit community. Members are linked on Facebook and Skype, and communicate on the ETC forum and IRC. While they share strategies and deck lists, there are also huge areas on their forum for random discussions, jokes, forum games, and their famous beer tent. ETC takes pride in creating an environment where members and have the opportunity to connect with each other and share their troubles and celebrate their achievements. While guild members have not met in person, Veles says he considers all the guild members his friends. Kaos Dark, agrees, saying the thing he likes most about the guild is players that are a part of it.
Members of ETC are notorious for joking around on the forum and their quirky sense of humour but don’t mistake that they are only interested in casual game play. The ETC guild also holds vast Shadow Era know-how and talent. ETC has made its mark in a number of high level tournaments, including the final stages of both the 2012 and 2013 World Championships. They have also hosted many successful tournaments such as the Extremely Tough Challenge series and some silly ones like the Dead Man’s Hand Tournament. Deckbuilding and Strategy advice is given freely between members and to the broader Shadow Era community through the forum. ETC members Alzorath, GnEric, and Fou Delile all have helpful Youtube channels.
The ETC membership is diverse, consisting of causal and competitive players from all over the world and all walks of life. The common element between all members is the shared passion for Shadow Era. ETC members, Buqs and Veles, had never played any other trading card game before Shadow Era. The strategy in the game play and the artwork immediately got them both hooked. For FouDeLile, it’s specifically the strategy around the resource system that has drawn him in; “it forces the player to make a lot decisions starting on turn one and at the same time it makes unplayable hands very rare with a well-built deck.” Shadow Era offers a high balanced and strategic game while “not running face first into a pay wall like a lot of DTCGs”, GnEric points out. Fou DeLile agrees, saying “acquiring enough cards to put together a couple of competitive decks is also very cheap compared to competitors.” Super Grover adds, “I feel that Shadow Era is the best vaule dCCG out there, you don't have to spend a huge amount of money to get 4x of every card.”
ETC provides a strong community of friends, united by the love of Shadow Era. They welcome both the causal and competitive player. Preybird explains that it’s more than just playing skills that ETC looks for in new recruits, “above all else we are looking for people who love the game, and love the community and want to help grow within both”. If you’re interested in joining the Shadow Era ETC guild, visit them in the official forum or on the ETC forum and introduce yourself!
