It's very possible. As with all builds though, they have their weaknesses.
Hero-wise... I'd go Amber, Gwen, DarkClaw, Moonstalker, Nishaven. Possibly in that order, possibly not.
Reasons:
Amber/Gwen. Weapon heavy. Can do well with less allies.
DarkClaw/Moonstalker: Damage reduction and healing. Main condition would be decking your opponent. (Running them out of cards).
Nishaven: Good ally control and direct damage abilities.
Disregarding the mill [spit!] deck, the new cards are mainly allies which are powerful, even the hero's abilities have been rework to board presence oriented. So IMO it's rather impossible for any ally-less deck to be successful. Perhaps when there are new weapons and armour come out, it might become possible again.

I run an allyless amber every now and then for amusement.
She works just fine

It's possible, but doesn't garner great win percentages. I ran allyless Nish and Eladwen for a while, who are in my opinion the most viable. I had around a 50% win record when doing this, with some really good records against some heroes and really bad against others.
It's useful to try allyless decks to see what they can accomplish, but all good decks have versatility. For me, that means building a deck that can win board control OR win the game some other way, usually through weapons or DD spells. The strategy you learn in allyless decks is still useful in decks with allies.
