This is a great thread, I agree. Having played 10 years of Mtg, I can say that right now SE is as balanced as some of the best Mtg metagames (invasion block) and waaaay more than some of the worst (like when skullclamp came out).

I don't know why I haven't signed off on this sooner.

You're very right about Invasion block, especially after Apocalypse was released. The meta was hugely varied. MANY three and four color decks. I really enjoyed that block - thank you for reminding me. Heh, Fire & Ice, Prophetic Bolt, and Absorb, Counterspell, Memory Lapse (I think), topped off with Lightning Angel - awesome. I miss MTG sometimes.

Hmm... every card you mentioned was blue. Let's add in Fact of Fiction and Psychatog too!
I personally loved Ravnica. You could play Gruul/Boros (red-green/red-white) aggro, Selesnya (green-white) swarm, Orzhov (black-white) aggro-control, Izzet-Tron (blue-red) combo, or any of the blue-white or blue-black control decks, in one tournament and had a chance of success.
