Both Jericho and Majiya are considered to be T1 decks right now. You can pick Majiya for her incredible gameplay consistency, but at the cost of losing Killtrend's respect.

Get Nishaven (Human Mage) when you sign up (you can't get Majaya) and then buy the Shadow Mage deck with your first 100 crystals. You will then be able to combine the Mage cards from both starters to make 2 good decks - Gravebone and Majaya. You can sell Nishaven and the other Human cards and then buy any extra Shadow cards you need.

Jericho is easy to play and a good hero. But imho there isn't such as a best hero. Depends on the person who built the deck and plays it...

If just starting out, I would suggest Majiya - her ability allows you to draw cards - allowing you to cast more spells/wider range and it's a fast track to learn more about how the game works, possible combos and card interactions. Your opponent is also forced to react to the cards you play and you'll learn how others counter your cards, etc.
