The scroll had become illegible. Iptsheur Leander tilted her survey slate down for a moment and peered at the ancient Golem. It was the fifth she had found today in these cavernous rock formations surrounding the Balor Conflux. It was getting late and the Warscribe was anxious to return to the Hall of Doors.

"Why aren't you on the survey manifests?" she said to the dormant assembly of metal and stone. Needlessly vocalising was, according to her mentor Aldreides, a misdirection of energy. Iptsheur racked her brain, searching for a document that might shed some light on this mystery Golem.

As Golems went, this one was notably unusual in its proportions. There was something unquantifiable in both its heft and dimensions. It was not quite as large as the more hulking Arch-Golem heroes of renown, but exuding a rare and forceful menace all of its own. The Golem had likely been static for millennia, though even frozen it had agency in every aspect: a paragon of the Aldmor Watcher design. It only moved if it absolutely had to.

So why was this one not accounted for in previous surveys? Iptsheur had seen enough in her travels to know for sure this one had not moved, nor been moved here, recently. She instinctively called for Hook, her diminutive automaton assistant, but he was still back in the previous chamber analysing an ancient mural hewn into the stone.

"Well, the survey trail starts here then," muttered the Warscribe, flicking across to a fresh entry on her slate. Standing back to get the whole Golem into shot, she held up the slate and ionised an image. The criteria for classification had long ago burned itself into her psyche over her long academic journey.

Determining the specific designation presented the second issue. The Golem clearly had some specialised combat customizations lavished with Aldmor dialect runes of obscure origin. She pursed her lips and winced as she concentrated to read aloud the legend locked behind the ancient symbols:

"For the enduring honour of Garrillus th- ... ".

The rest was scratched away by apparent battle damage. Upon further examination there was significant wear to be found in almost every section of the Golem's fuselage and bronzed gears. Even the stone panels featured crazed scoring.

"Where have you been, Garrillus, and what have you been fighting?" said Iptsheur and immediately after came a heavy, muffled impact that made her jump with fright.

"HOOK?!" she shouted with uncertainty, to which a binary toot issued in reply from depths of the distant chamber. Couldn't have been Hook then, she thought. Her automaton appeared from the shadows, ambling over obediently in answer to her call.

She could see from the panel situated on the top of her small companion that it had just registered seismic activity from this locale. Hook couldn't talk, being more a tool than a companion, but Iptsheur had grown fond of the Aldmor machine and felt reassured in its presence.

There was a sudden snap of charged air, like the moment before a lightning strike, and a voice rose seemingly from the ground beneath her feet.

"Unit Garrillus, returning from successful Hellworld Crusade Sigma, had been drifting lost in the Grain for an indefinite period until reverse chronology 1180.7 when beacon range retrieved unit to rallying destination Conflux Zeta ..."

There was a heavy thrumming behind every word that sounded like a giant bee in flight. Shocked, Iptsheur's eyes widened at the implication of the Golem's words. "1180.7? Clarify, please."

"1180.7 years, Warscribe," thundered the Golem in reply. "Command chain broken. Initiated operational sequence after key Aldmor personnel identified. Iptsheur Leander: Garrillus awaits further instruction."
