"Abilility you control"

What is exactly an "ability you control" ?
Must it be an item on the board, or it can also be an instant abilityin your hand ?

It's a card of type "ability" which is in play and controlled by you. Attachments and support abilities you've summoned are under your control.

If it's not in play, but in your hand, you don't yet control it. When we want to refer to a card in your hand, we'll say something like "target ability in your hand".

We use "item you control", "ally you control" in similar ways.
