Cutlass stealing discard cards

I've always wondered...

Serena has a 1/2 nightshade on board fighting a prax

If Serena buffs cutlass to 4 and hits prax in the face...

And the card discarded is say a Brimstone...

Does brimstone's ability trigger to deal 3 fire damage to the nightshade and then go to Serena's hand?

Of does the brimstone deals no damage and go to Serena's hand?

And what if the card wasn't a brimstone... What if it was reactorary? What happens then?

Heya,

A Brimstone Devourer will deal its damage first and then go to Serena's hand. A Reactory, however, will not end up in play and instead go into Serena's hand. This is because a Brimstone Devourer only needs to be discarded to trigger and resolve its effect. A Reactory needs to be in the graveyard in order for it to be put into play successfully.
