We as players join guilds for a variety of reasons. We want comrads in arms, to be part of a team, to learn more advanced techniques of play, to exchange ideas and theories of the game, and to be part of something greater than ourselves. While there are many quality guilds in SE, for every one of the listed purposes, A1 fits the bill precisely.
When I was looking into the available guilds, I was attracted to A1 primarily because of their tennant of challenging the meta. I had some controversial ideas, and thought that made for a good fit for me. After I applied, and was accepted for probation, I discovered there was so much more to this great guild. To start with, A1 simply has the best players in the game. No disrespect is intended to BP, AP, or any of the other guilds who each have their share of excellent players, but the best of the best play for A1. Despite this fact (or maybe because of it) the overall attitude of the guild is very open minded toward new ideas. Even before I completed my probationary period, several of A1's elite players spent hours helping me test what they had to know was several hair brained concept decks that had no chance to work in a competitive environment. All the while, politely offering me deck lists of competition grade proven decks they thought would fit my play style.
This open minded but knowledgable approach has helped me greatly improve my game in a short period, and my enjoyment of the game as well. When I log on to play each day, it is a foregone conclusion that one or two guild mates will pop into a game to observe, offer suggestions, or suggest sons test games. It is one of the most inclusive, truly positive online gaming groups I have ever encountered.
If you are looking for a guild, have something to offer the group, and truly want to be a better player, A1 should be tops on your list. The standards are high, you may not be accepted, but you owe it to yourself to put in the application.
