The major complaint that we cared about was autopiloting and games being largely determined by luck. Delaying AW hitting the board gives more opportunity for choice, more chance to set up, less time until the bigger removal options are available and AW itself starts doing its damage one turn later. Overall, there's more time for the opponent to counter what they are facing, which ensures this is more like a game that two people are playing.
TL;DR: It was changed mostly on NPE grounds and not OP grounds.
