I don't think there's a legal way to play free Magic.

The Duels of the Planeswalkers games are decent at showing off the game, although the card pools in them aren't really that deep.

buy some physical cards and play with your IRL friends saf. Magic is still the most popular physical card game, and with good reason. It's worth the bucks you spend, at least in the beginning. One might argue that once you start hunting all the good and rare cards, you'll be spending a lot of money, but getting 2 starter decks is a very good buy.

    Magic Workstation is free.
And also Cockatrice, but I don't know if it's stil available, they had legal problems.

I can recommend Magarena (on GoogleCode) and magefree (on github).
They have a GUI similar to Magic Online and support a lot of cards. You can download card images directly in the programs.

IRL friends suck when it comes to playing interesting games. Hell even my brother who I could always depend on to play the Doom boardgame with me (yes, it exists, and is even more awesome than you are imagining) and now he's on his own online games :l He'll still play a few games of SE with me tho but that's about it!

you can always go to your local cardgame shop. Nothing as fun as a good old night of nerdy drafting with other nerds that share your interests Makes you feel right at home, even if it will always stay a tad awkward.

I like what I've seen so far. Waiting with full anticipation, it's gonna be sick.
