I think the problem is that you can only play others who are on v2.82...and not everyone has updated...there are only 5 games being played in v2.82 right at this moment. [edit: now there are 6 games going on]

You lose nothing by updating. The base game is still there but you also have the ability to buy SF boosters if you want (the merchant still sells DP and CotC singles).
