One feature that everyone is excited about is the automated tournament system. Today we'll take a look at the basic functionality and open it up for more discussion, feedback, and questions.
Feature Overview
The automated tournament system will allow players to create and join popup tournaments. Drafts, meltdown, and constructed tournaments are supported with either 4 or 8 players.
Entry Fees
- 700 shadow crystals for drafts (6 packs)
- 500 shadow crystals for meltdown (4 packs)
- 100 shadow crystals for constructed (they use their own cards)
The entry fee is taken from each player as soon as the tournament starts. Players can join and leave a tournament before it starts without paying a fee. Before the start of the first game, after drafting or opening the meltdown packs, the player will have those cards permanently added to their library.
Rewards
8 player tournament: 1st place = 500 shadow crystals. 2nd place = 200 shadow crystals.
4 player tournament: 1st place = 250 shadow crystals. 2nd place = 100 shadow crystals.
The rewards will be automatically given to the player at the end of their final match.
Time Limits
Meltdown: 5 minutes to create a deck.
Draft: 35 seconds to choose a card, decreasing by 2s each card from that pack to a minimum of 10s. So when the player is picking their 5th card from a pack, they have 35 - 4*2s = 27s. And then 3 minutes for deck building.
Other Features
A tournament room chat box will allow players to communicate with each other and give tournament progress updates.
Players are free to leave the tournament screen while they are waiting for the next game to start. A popup message will alert them when their opponent is ready, and they will have 2 minutes to start their next match.
Observers can view the tournament in progress and watch live games or replay previous matches.
Where We Are
As we demonstrated in a recent weekly live stream, the basic functionality of the automated tournament system is already complete and working well.
What's Left To Do
Integration of the tournament system into the live server was mostly waiting on the new networking framework to be completed for more stable connections. We also need to update it with the concept of owning unopened booster packs, and accepting event tickets for payment. The tournament GUI also needs to be improved and integrated into the challenge screen better.
How You Can Help
