ShadowEra20241.pkg can't be opened because it's from an unidentified developer

I got the message "ShadowEra20241.pkg can't be opened because it's from an unidentified developer" on OS X 10.9. All previous versions of SE have installed fine on 10.8 and prior. Is there something that needs to be updated in the pkg that will allow it to run on 10.9?

No, nothing needs to change in the program. You need to edit your Mac's security settings so that it does recognize the developer.
Congratulations to Preybird for designing my Avatar!

For anyone else who has this trouble ...

You can choose to override your security settings and open the app anyway.

    • In the Finder, locate the app you want to open. Most apps can be found in the Applications folder.
    • Press the Control-key, then click the app icon.
    • Choose Open from the shortcut menu.
    • Click Open.

Mac OS has had this feature for some time now and it tends to disable the use of unidentified developer's apps by default when updating to a new version of the OS.

You can allow the use of all applications through:
System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General
It is at the bottom as "Allow apps downloaded from". Set this to "Anywhere" and you can run any applications without problems.

This is set this way by default to protect the user from running harmful software of course, but to be honest, who downloads and runs random apps without knowing what they do.

The previous version of the OS set this to either "Mac App Store" or "Mac app store and identified developers" by default as does this version of the OS. At least for me that is.
