The star means they were Call of the Crystals Preorder backers.

They get those too. Haven't actually seen either of these features myself, as I haven't viewed the challenge screen or any games yet.

We did. I assume the star is in place of the different color, although I haven't asked yet.

Animated/glowy avatar was really annoying, so a shiny gold border was used instead. Different color name messed up the winner display, so a star was used instead.
