How about no rating at all?

So, I don't know if this is in support or criticism on the OP, but...

Theres a lot of math behind rating systems. Trueskill is one variant that focuses on skill-appropriate-matchups, while ELO grants a more "competitive" approach, but doesn't really help with matchup-generation. For a multi-platform all-demographic game, trueskill just makes more sense as it allows for a better "pickup and play" game experience (thus why microsoft makes it available for xbox games). Unfortunately, ELO doesn't really help you much with matchmaking - its just abstracting pure "skill" - which isn't a very good mathematical model for rankings in a "casual" game.

The microsoft white paper goes into detail about how trueskill creates better matchmaking, but has incongruities at the high and low levels. Personally, I think without the massive player-base of something like Call of Duty, those disparities are amplified (thus the ability to get "stuck" at a rating bracket, exacerbated by the rating decay).

I think Wulven is looking to the tournament system to fill this niche, and I'm guessing they will implement a corresponding "tournament rating" which better rewards "skill" in the abstract.
