    Debate!

I have a school project where we have to debate on a subject.

    My subject is abortion.

Are you for or against abortion?

Please keep the debate civil and provide useful info.

    Thanks!

For now I'm against. But my buddies have me some good reasons for me to be for.

    So I'm undecided

Oh man, do you REALLY want to bring that topic here?? Lots of people feel very strongly one way or the other and can get into beyond-heated arguments over it, even lose friendships -- SE is a nice place to escape messes like that.

Just research reasons for and against it online, you'll find plenty of fodder for a debate.

Google is probably a good friend for info.

In most debates, you'll need to do 2 things to win:

    1. Make sure your points/facts are so strong that it's hard to refute against. Likewise, counter your opponents' points so bad that they sound like they are talking rubbish.

    2. Always discuss the topic is a wholistic direction: cover politics, economy, science, social, health, history, human geography, etc.

I have to agree here. Hence, I think it's better to just point a direction to help bdk in his research.

I suggest you read two article essays. "Why abortion is immoral" by don marquis and "a defense for abortion" by judith Thomson.

These two articles are what I read for my ethics class and I think you will find very good arguments.

I personally is more pro choice because I think the woman has a right to her own body. The government should not have a say. However, one question is when does that fetus be conspired life and when aborting it actually becomes murder. Is it first trimester? Or is it around8 months? What ifthewoman was raped? There are many situations. What if the child inside the mother has a very horrible disease where you know that it would just mean a life of torment for the child?

There are a lot of nice analogies like the unconscious violinist that will make you go pro choice. I really encourage you read those two articles trust me its a life changer lol.

    Anywhooo, hope I helped =]

Great advice Raph. Also, know both sides equally well -- you need to know what your opponent will be bringing to the debate and not get caught off guard only knowing one side of the story. It's like building a deck : you build contingencies into most decks, trying to think of what it's weaknesses are and what you can do about them -- same with a debate: identify your weaknesses, what will your Opp use as their arguments and how will they try to defeat your arguments.

Also, pick the side you think you can talk the most passionately and eloquently about - it will translate when you speak.

I was a cat high boy in case you are curious.

Represented my class for inter class and in Jc debates. Won the Jc 2 cohort one and also best speaker for Finals.

Never joined the school team, I preferred other activities.
