Great read. I used to play chess, so this was a trip back memory lane too. Thanks.

    Good read indeed.

I analyzed myself and wasn't astonished to see that I am still a noob. ^^

It would be good to add a screenshot of a match, and then ask what people see (no need to respond), and then for your analysis of what a Master or beginner would see based on your earlier comments.

Nice article; you could have added that Masters can often predict opponent's plays and future scenarios better than Novices, due to major number of game and opponents played. I don't know if the chess article referred only to "chunks", but that's probably the most important reward from game experience.

    Great article, indeed.

I just want to throw in my two cents as well. Perhaps it is easier to grasp the concept in OP if one distinguishes between tactic and strategy in a SE game. Tactics are the actual means used to gain an objective, while strategy is the overall campaign plan, which may involve complex operational patterns, activity, and decision-making that lead to tactical execution. The Master is already familiar with all the tactics and hence only needs to think on the strategic level.

    Yea excellent points.

One question hinted at in the OP is also this - IS shadow era a sufficiently complex game to warrant higher level thinking?

If SE is simple enough, then it can beplayed strictly by reading the cards and making optimal decisions.

For example, if I asked how many odd numbers between 0 and 10, you can use lower level / brute force; just count them. However, if I just asked, how many odd numbers are there -

Lower level thinking means you count them, 1, 3, 5, 7...

Higher level thinking can come in. "It seems there is a pattern... The numbers can go on forever..."

No individual number reveals the "infiniteness" of te sequence, just likein SE, perhaps there are situations where no individual card reveals the best play. Instead, the best play sometimes requires experience/intelligence.

Unbelievable, just really unbelievable,, I was trying to get lil Kip to keep playing chess with me and ( of course) she thinks it's boring! I threw out that SE was very much like chess with first game , middle and end. How you have to plan for it and anticipate what might happens, ( she wasn't listening) but I am going to show her this tomorrow, ( not that will help my case) and maybe I'll get her to play some more!

1ndeed, Great write up! Thanks and wish me luck!

Edit: 3rd read, realization, lil Kip has a chance to be a Master, ole man Thorp. Not so much! Many games or not!
