Its worded that way so we can have modes that have more than just two players. Currently you can play like this in the physical format, but iirc SE Radio said its a planned feature.

If I've learned anything over my time playing tcgs, playing with more than just 2 people is some of the most fun that can be had. Which is also one of the reasons I love that SE has a physical game.
