Excellent thread, thanks!
Stickied, as it is in fact a great guide.
I believe it might indeed help a lot of new players that just came into the game.
Good job, azrae1!

Quick questions about Pop-up tourneys.
- are they open to everybody or to a specific target (like guild members etc)
- are they Bo3? If so, do the standard "first in game 1, second in game 2, flip a coin in game 3" apply?
- how are brackets organized? Is it up to TO, or randomly chosen?
- are they hero/deck locked?
- do you have to public your hero before the tourney?
Thanks guys for info on the above
Answering:
Every Pop-Up has it's own rules, but what i'll answer is the general rules of thumb that usually apply:
- Pop-Ups are open to everyone, altough the time they occur (as they occur in a specific time, by definition) may favour some timezones better than others; but there's no guild restrictions in Pop-Ups presented in this forum.
- The Bo3 and the rules of starting are general rules used by 95% of the tournaments overall, including Pop-Ups. If changed, Pop-Ups announce it in their threads.
- Pairings are organized by TO and depend on the popup format. In the majority of cases, they are random, generated by an automatic tool, like Challonge.com.
- that depends a lot from the format. It's one of the more variating aspects. The TO tends to display that info on the tourney thread, anyway.
- It depends if the tourney has hero lock or not, and even if it has, depends on the TO's ruling on that matter. See the answer above.
That's pretty much it. Feel free to ask any further questions.

Azrae1, a big thank you from someone who has yet to play a tourney. I've been hesitant to sign up because of the various factors that you mentioned, but having this guide makes the process seem less convoluted.
TJ Good IshX
Glad players are finding it useful and giving them an idea that tournaments are not that difficult to join.
@gnome72 - I didn't include details in the OP that would have answered your questions because it really depends on the tournament organizer. NaharPT has answered your questions which pretty much sums to "majority do this but it depends on the TO".
I would assume that Guild popups do occur but those are probably advertised in their respective guild forums rather than in these forums.
Just wondering I'm recently looking for an ipad app for the IRC I was just wondering which one you find best
