Petition: grant moderators more authority

New users inevitably going to create new topics about the same thing. The moderator's job is to merge the discussion if necessary or locking the topic entirely with redirect (first is preferable). The problem is when original discussion is locked, meaning the only way to continue discussing the topic is create a new thread. At the end of the day that forums are for: discussing things, why lock topics?

+1 for merging those dupes into existing threads.

of course this only works if older threads get not locked.

i also think locking should only be used if absolutely necessary,
not after a certain amount of time (though not sure if an auto lock for old threads is done here in se forum, but i think it is)

future attempts of using the search engine would also give better results if new duplicates get merged into existing threads instead of getting locked.

but indeed that takes a lot of time/manpower...
something that i am not sure about if there is enough of available.

It is in certain categories. It was implemented as a measure against necroposting, but I don't see much problem in it.

Truthfully, I just picked the one of many. And it had unofficial in the title.

As for being a mod...

I don't see why not, but many people would object, fearing abuse left and right. They're right though. I would abuse my powers... on people who pm'ed me and said it's ok to play "editing pranks."

Which I totally would do. Change one word in a sentence and people all over will go wth and cackle. I used to do that on a1 forums once in a while to people I didn't think would object.

Here, one should acquire permission first. Too many touchy people here, and I would be representing wulven, and thus emily... err I meant kyle. But we all know who's gonna be in charge of kyle's sleep schedule for the next 3 years.

I'm pretty sure I got vitality's arms back in shape with all the fist shaking. And flattened his/your forehead with facepalms. Good memories. But that's not really the goal here, anyways.

Thanks but this thread isn't about me being mod. It's about petitioning mods to do something about all these damned duplicates.
