There is no incentive to doing an online challenge.

Why am I going to risk playing someone online and potentially losing when I can take down the AI players with ease and still get the same xp and gold?

Your player rating doesn't change from AI matches.

If you are asking the question, then you probably shouldn't.

Opinions are like assholes: everybody has one. That doesn't mean the Internet gives a shit about yours.
Facts, on the other hand, are the same for everyone. This is why the Internet may listen to you once in a while if you use facts.

Depends on what you want to do. The AI is better for grinding out EXP and gold, since it's easy to beat them and they won't lag or spend a long time to make moves.

Go against an online opponent when you start to care about rating or want to play against someone smarter (sometimes). Also, I believe that you actually do gain more EXP when you win against a higher rated opponent (I think I read this somewhere, but I haven't done it myself yet).

Maybe once they do achievements, they'll have things like "Get to a rating of 500!" to bring more incentive to doing online challenges.
