It's kind of the same thing with Deathbone. He deals 2 damage on death, and if you kill him with TD, the hero takes damage. Not really that strange?

There's currently some discussion about possibly changing destroy/kill effects to remove the item/ally from play instead of it dealing damage. This would bring it inline with other games so while on the outside, it may seem like it publicly, the Design Team does discuss and consider the different perspectives on the various issues.
Regarding Assassination, this is one of the rarer cards in the aspect that the damage is sourced from the ally rather than the hero. The wording of the card was carefully revised to specifically address this.
