I was thinking that certain ally cards could be played face-down, only to pop up on the opponent's turn. Whilst in face-down mode they would be classified as an "item". (This helps increase the usefulness of trap cards) Something like this:
Card name: Assassin
Type: Shadow Ally
CC: 2
Stats: 1/2
Ability: Play face down as an item. At the start of your next turn, flip it face-up as an ally, unexhausted.
Note, during its face-down mode it is an item and naturally cannot be attacked by creatures. This fits in with certain rogues as it does not seem very sneaky to appear exhausted in the battlefield vulnerable to getting attacked. At least when they appear they will deal the first blow.
If the Assassin in its item form is destroyed by item-destroying effects, the Assassin could come out to the battlefield exhausted, vulnerable after having his cover blown! :P
