I agree with the original poster(not OP people).I don't find abbreviations beginner friendly,even intermediates can have problems with them in my opinion.I saw the shadow era terminology at the New Players section and that's quite a big list and we are now only on 200 cards,imagine what will be at 1000.The abbreviations are also a way for "pro" players to show off their intrinsic knowledge of the game,it feeds their ego i guess.But i reckon you can't stop the trend,so there's nothing you can do than ask politely what the guy means by "SS"
