Would assume it's just there as another in game picture, like Yari Vanguard on the login screen or Bazaar in the merchant. Would be cool if it was customizable though.

That looks quite nice indeed. I actually really like being able to see what hero people are playing, that way if I want to spectate a game with a specific hero in it, I can easily see, instead of...
