Setting the minimum to 45 might actually penalize those who are not in guilds. Testing deck builds will now make it harder for those that can't get regular custom games. Sure you can play 45 card decks on QM but at high levels you'll be getting matched up with skilled players with tuned decks that are at the current minimum and it'll be difficult to gauge how well your deck is.
I'm sure all those interested will still play if the minimum is set at 45 but I just don't understand the reasoning behind it. To find the best and most skilled deck builders? We can't do that at 40? I've found that tournaments are not necessarily won by the player with the most popular deck at the moment but by those players who have successfully understood the meta and created the counter build to beat it as well as others that might appear in the tourney. Look at LyingDragon and Benumb's decks in the first world championship when Majiya was expected to win. Look at Yarikasakin's Majiya and Gravebone decks for two consecutive Crowns.
I doubt we've gotten all the good builds out of the current cards at this point and with the balance that has been achieved with the latest version, there are now more choices in building that deck that might beat the current meta.
+1 to Danae
Just to be clear, I'm not saying I won't be able to adapt or build good decks for it. In fact, because I generally gravitate toward control anyhow, literally all of my tournament decks are 42-43 card decks anyhow. Raising the minimum to 45 will harm aggro decks and not dilute my draw much further, so it's actually beneficial to my style of play.
However, if the discussion is open on this, I absolutely DO think it's not the best thing for the community, not the best test of skill, harmful to the current meta, and an inferior fomat for an official world championships.
Looks like you have your topic for the next A1 podcast, NinjaDucky. :)
All this discussion is very good and the deck size chosen for the Swiss stages of Worlds will take into account the many arguments for and against 45 cards.
Hopefully, the discussion on this thread from this point will be very constructive. We all want the same thing - the best possible World Championship event - so let's work together on this.
Is anyone not being constructive here?
I hope you didn't read my response to you wrong, I meant it as 100% a compliment. x)
But let me ask you this, if you don't feel 45 is best overall for the community.. May I ask what you feel is best, and a mixup for the community?
Haha, no I get that. I don't mean to sound upset or anything. I guess I just got into my "argument voice." Sorry about that :)
If you look at Danae's post and my 2 posts prior to that, I think that about sums it up as much as possible. The 40-card minimum is going to be best overall. As iClipse said, for smaller events funky formats can be lots of fun! But for something like this, standard format is best.
I do like the part about bringing 2 decks and playing 4 matches. That helps lessen the odds that someone just gets unlucky with their matchup.
I'm trying not to repeatedly make long posts that keep saying the same thing, so I'll stop this one here, but if there's a specific point from what I'm saying that you want to discuss in more detail, I'm down for that. :)
I agree with Danae and NinjaDucky. 40 card would be the best for this tournament.
Maybe add a poll?
